Media - "Fun"

 Media - "Fun"

I had an interesting interaction with sending a trailer for something to a friend, to which they responded with a very simple "This looks fun".

And I sat down with them to unpack that when I would not have used 'fun' to describe something so kinetically energetic and violent.

Was 'fun' used as an adjective or placeholder word because this person was not engaged or interested in the media? Do they lack the cultural touchpoints to understand context? Is 'fun' a statement about visual colour without seeing representations of blood and violence?

The piece of media is from 'another culture' (sort of), really an American piece of culture reimagined in Anime.

Does this person perhaps not have an appropriate reference for that medium of anime, and thus the symbolism is lost?

Are there other cultural bits and pieces missed?

Or is 'fun' an easily thrown word out to acknowledge or dismiss?

I know as a game designer, I'm extremely tuned to the exact words people use when they describe their experiences with something.

"Fun" rarely means that exactly.

I really like delving into the exact reason people choose words, and how they interact with media. How they interpret story, music, character, and motion.

Sometimes I wonder if others spend as much time analyzing and unpacking the choices people around them make?

Anyway, the piece of media I shared was the teaser trailer for Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

Take a look if you haven't already.

Is "Fun" a weird word to use to describe it?
